In June 2024, the Biden administration introduced the Keeping Families Together initiative, aiming to assist certain undocumented immigrants married to U.S. citizens. The program offered temporary legal status and a pathway to permanent residency for those who had resided in the U.S. for over a decade without serious criminal records. One of its most notable features was allowing eligible individuals to adjust their status within the U.S., avoiding prolonged reentry bans.
However, in August 2024, a federal judge in Texas ruled that the policy exceeded executive authority, leading to its suspension. As a result, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) halted acceptance and processing of applications under the initiative.

USCIS to Refund $55 Million in Application Fees
With the suspension of this program, USCIS announced it will refund application fees to those who applied in good faith. Nearly 94,000 applicants, each having paid $580 in fees, are set to receive reimbursements totaling approximately $55 million.
How Refunds Will Be Processed
- For Individual Applicants: USCIS will process refunds automatically. Applicants do not need to submit any additional requests to receive their refund. Refunds will be issued via the payment method used during the original filing. Applicants should expect to receive their funds in the coming months.
- If a Law Firm Paid the Fees: If our firm submitted the filing fees on your behalf, the refund will be issued directly to us as the payer of record. In such cases, we will promptly notify you once we receive the refund and ensure the funds are returned to you or credited toward any outstanding legal fees, depending on your arrangement with our office.
